The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has reportedly called a meeting of domestic as well as foreign telecom equipment manufacturers to discuss formulation of product link incentive (PLI) scheme.

The online meeting is to be held on June 3, 2020.

As per industry sources, the government intends to push manufacturing of products in the 5G space and curb imports. Further, government also aims to attract companies who are looking to shift their base or portion of manufacturing from China to any alternate destination.

The draft of the scheme proposes 4 per cent to 6 per cent incentives of about Rs 100 billion on incremental sales of goods manufactured in India over a period of five years, said sources.

Recently, multinational telecom gear makers had urged DoT to hold an urgent consultation on the proposed PLI scheme.
