The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is planning to hire a senior telecom consultant to study the telecom licensing and regulatory policies of 20 developed and developing countries. This is to help DoT formulate the National Telecom Policy (NTP) 2011.

The consultant hired for the job will analyse the advantages and disadvantages of the policy adopted by various countries, with emphasis on best practices. The DoT group formed for framing the NTP 2011 will also examine the merits and demerits of converged services being provided in these countries and the scope of new services that can be incorporated in the Indian telecom space.

This apart, Kapil Sibal Minister of Telecommunications and IT will hold several round-table discussions with the industry.
