The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has sent a reference to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) seeking reserve price for various bands for the next round of 5G spectrum auction. These bands could reportedly be worth over Rs 2.5 trillion.

As per industry sources, all the unsold airwaves from the 2022 auction, as well as some additional quantum in the 27 GHz band or millimetre wave (mmWave) spectrum, will be put up on sale. DoT is planning to put spectrum ranging from 600 MHz to above 37 GHz on sale. However, DoT has excluded the 6 GHz band from the upcoming auctions in light of the contention between the telecom and technology industry over the allotment of the spectrum.

TRAI will now study the reference from the DoT and release a consultation paper on the issue in the next few weeks.
