The telecom industry is set to face more trouble as the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has sought a legal opinion from the Ministry of Law for cancellation of additional 19 telecom licences.

The government had issued a total of 141 2G licences on January 10, 2010. Of these, only 122 2G licences were cancelled by the Supreme Court in February 2012. DoT therefore is seeking a legal opinion regarding whether the remaining licences should be cancelled or not.

If the legal opinion is in favor of additional licences being cancelled, then it could affect dual-SIM operators such as Tata Teleservices, Reliance Communications and GSM players such as Bharti Airtel and Vodafone.
