DoT has requested MTNL to vacate its unused third and fourth CDMA carrier spectrum. BSNL is expected to receive a similar letter shortly. The telecom PSUs have a combined surplus of 2.5 MHz of spectrum. If this were vacated, it would enable private CDMA operators to expand their services to at least another 300,000 to 400,000 subscribers in Mumbai and Delhi alone.
