The government has relaxed the time frame for self certification of radiation norms for installation of new mobile towers and upgradation of existing cell sites.

The move has been undertaken in the wake of COVID-19 crisis.

To this end, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has allowed service providers to self certify compliance in 30 days after commissioning of new mobile towers or upgrading existing units.

In its letter to the telecom operators, DoT has said that in case of new base transceiver station (BTS), the due date of submission of self-certificate shall be 30 days after the date of commissioning of BTS. While, in case of upgradation, the due date of submission of self-certificate shall be 30 days.

Earlier, Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), had written to the DoT for relaxation of norms as it is not practical for their employees to visit sites in ongoing lockdown.
