Differences have cropped up between the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, over the funding of mobile communications infrastructure in Naxal prone states. DoT officials have refused the operator?s request for subsidising the rollout of networks in these territories.

They have asked BSNL to meet all operating costs linked to the project from its internal revenues. On BSNL’s compensation demand for associated capital costs incurred, the USOF has directed the matter to Kapil Sibal, Minister of Communications and IT.

Also, at a recent DoT meeting, it was decided that BSNL would be asked to establish mobile networks only around the major police stations across all Naxal- prone zones.
