The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is planning an alliance between Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL), research body C-DoT, India Telephone Industries (ITI) and Telecommunications Consultants India Limited (TCIL). This alliance is aimed at bringing about operational synergies amongst these companies.
If the alliance goes through, these companies will share their telecom assets and buy products and services at preferential rates to optimise central sector resources and withstand competition from private sector rivals.
Prior to this, DoT was considering merging ITI, MTNL and BSNL, as suggested by the Board for Reconstruction of Public Sector Enterprises (BRPSE).
