
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) may initiate criminal proceedings against Matrix Cellular (International) Services for allegedly procuring SIM cards from Vodafone Essar and renting them out in violation of the provisions of the Indian Telegraph Act.
DoT also plans to impose a Rs 500 million penalty on Vodafone Essar for violating licence terms by renting out the SIM cards.
According to an internal DoT note, the department?s vigilance wing, TERM Cell-Delhi, ?shall shortly file a criminal case in the court of a first-class magistrate under Section 20 of the IT Act against Matrix Cellular for working unauthorised telegraphs”.
