The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is planning to seek legal advice on whether to withdraw the adjusted gross revenue (AGR) demands of Rs 4.28 trillion against public sector undertakings (PSUs) such as GAIL, Power Grid and Oil India or first file a clarification with the Supreme Court (SC) and wait for its orders.

Recently, the Supreme Court came down strongly on the DoT for serving demand notices to PSUs. Further, the court questioned government on how telecom dues were demanded from the PSUs and warned of action against DoT officials for issuing the notices.

The apex court dubbed the government’s move to slap similar dues for recovery from PSUs as a misuse of its earlier ruling against the private telcos.
