DoT is likely to levy a fine of Rs 500 million per circle on seven major telecom operators for violating their licence conditions.

The operators are Spice Telecom, Bharti Airtel, Hutchison Essar (Vodafone Essar), Reliance Telecom, BSNL, Tata Teleservices Limited (TTSL) and Dishnet Wireless. The companies have reportedly set up cell sites within 10 km of the international border. There are 103 such sites in total, with 43 owned by BSNL. The PSU has admitted its error and taken corrective action.
