DoT is likely to ask Bharti Airtel and Tata Communications to terminate their contracts with SingTel, which has reportedly been offering international long distance (ILD) services in India without a licence. SingTel may also face a penalty on this account. SingTel is the parent company of SingTel Global (India) Private Limited, which has an ILD licence in India. Bharti and Tata Communications have entered into agreements with SingTel, which allow the operators to deal with Indian customers directly.
The move against SingTel is consistent with DoT’s plan to penalise foreign companies including AT&T, BT, Equant and Verizon Communications for illegally offering services prior to obtaining licences.
