In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Milind Deora, Minister of State for Communications and IT said that the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is in the process of issuing show cause notices to various operators. This, Deora said, was to enquire why 35 licences should not be terminated for failing to meet rollout obligations.

Deora added that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) had recommended cancelling 53 telecom licenses and also recommended seeking legal opinion once again on the issue of cancellation of another 30 licenses.

Further, Deora said that the case of two companies recommended by TRAI for cancellation was subjudice.

The licences recommended for cancellation belong to Aircel, Dishnet Wireless (Now Aircel), Etisalat DB, Idea Cellular, Sistema Shyam TeleServices Limited, Spice Communications, Vodafone Essar Spacetel, Loop Telecom, Videocon and Unitech Wireless.
