Idea Cellular has told the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) that the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) had imposed a Rs 500 million penalty on it for allegedly suppressing its customer database without providing any notice or an opportunity for the company to clarify its stand.
Senior advocate P.D. Kapoor, appearing for Idea Cellular, contended that the security agencies did not examine this issue thoroughly to determine if the operator had actually committed a security breach, as alleged by DoT.
While examining Idea Cellular?s networks in Andhra Pradesh, DoT uncovered that the operator had suppressed its actual customer database and imposed the penalty on it.
As per DoT?s Telecom Enforcement and Resource Monitoring (TERM) cell, the company has violated licence conditions and DoT?s norms pertaining to the verification and re-verification of existing subscribers.
