DoT has sanctioned Rs 16 billion for laying optical fibre as an alternative network for the defence forces. This will enable them to vacate 42.5 MHz of spectrum, including 3G spectrum, by September 2007. The defence ministry has agreed to vacate the spectrum if it is provided with an alternative.
