DoT has rejected Sistema Shyam TeleServices Limited’s (SSTL) request for additional CDMA spectrum. The company had sought to increase the start-up spectrum for CDMA operators from 2.5 MHz to 3.75 MHz. According to DoT, since CDMA is a more spectrum-efficient technology than GSM (for which the initial spectrum is 4.4 MHz), the current guidelines mandate the allotment of only 2.5 MHz of start-up spectrum for CDMA-based services.
