The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has reportedly formed a committee to prepare a strategy for the commercialisation and monetisation of 5G and the locally developed 5Gi standards.
The committee has been setup under Member (Technology) of DoT. The committee is entrusted with seeking inputs from stakeholders, including telecom operator, network provider, etc. regarding both technologies by March 2022 and a further two years in the long term.
DoT is also planning to prepare a strategy for development of 5G ecosystem and 5G based applications in the country. The government aims at promoting the 5Gi technology and it is of the opinion that operators should use 5Gi for rolling out their 5G wireless networks.
However, the three incumbent telcos- Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone-Idea have been opposing 5Gi standards and wants it to be considered as optional and not mandatory as they believe that making standard mandatory will increase the price of smartphones and will lead to delays in rollout.
