The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has extended the deadline for stakeholder feedback for the consultation paper on the need for a new legal framework governing telecommunication in India. The last date to submit comments has now been extended to September 1, 2022.

The DoT had earlier sought views on the need for overhauling laws governing the telecom sector on July 23, 2022, stressing the need to create a new legal framework which was clear, precise, and in tune with the changing times and technologies. Through the consultation paper, the DoT had called for changes in regulations on spectrum management, mergers and acquisitions, provisions pertaining to insolvency, and those related to national security, among other things.

As per the consultation paper, the new legal framework would address simplification of the regulatory framework and aim at establishing an enabling future-ready framework for the development of the telecom sector and deployment of new technologies.
