In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, Kapil Sibal, the Minister for Communications and IT has stated that the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is looking into proposals for increasing the revenue of Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL).
According to Sibal, DoT is looking at options like developing and leasing out land and monetising infrastructure through creation of ATMs in MTNL?s premises, leasing out spare space and sharing of operator?s towers to boost the company?s revenues. As per DOT?s estimates these activities have the potential of generating revenue of about Rs 1 billion for MTNL.
Sibal has also stated that MTNL is working on a voluntary retirement scheme for its staff in an effort to stem its increasing losses.
