The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has simplified the process for mobile users switching between prepaid and postpaid connections, aiming to improve consumer convenience. The updated directive reduces the cooling-off period for reconversion and allows transitions between plan types through a one-time password (OTP).

A major change is the shortening of the reconversion lock-in period. Previously, users switching between prepaid and postpaid plans had to wait 90 days before changing back. Under the new guidelines, the lock-in period for the first reconversion has been reduced to 30 days. However, for any subsequent OTP-based conversions, the original 90-day restriction will still apply.

The DoT has stressed the importance of transparency in the process. Operators must clearly inform users about the applicable lock-in period before initiating any conversion, ensuring informed consent and preventing misuse of the new, streamlined system.

Further, DoT has introduced a provision for early reconversion. Subscribers who wish to switch plans before the 30- or 90-day period ends may do so by completing a standard know your customer (KYC) verification at an authorised point of sale (PoS) or retail outlet. This added flexibility allows users to avoid being unnecessarily locked into a plan while maintaining essential security and regulatory safeguards.
