The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has announced the discontinuation of paper-based know-your-customer (KYC) verification for new mobile connections, effective January 1, 2024. The move aims to streamline the mobile user enrolment process, reduce costs for telcos and improve security by curbing SIM fraud.

As per a notification by DoT, considering various amendments/changes made in the existing KYC framework from time to time, it has been decided that the use of paper-based KYC process, as envisaged in instructions dated August 9, 2012, shall be discontinued.
