
According to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), despite several reminders, a few operators are yet to submit a compliance report regarding the usage of location based services (LBS).
Players including Bharti Airtel, Idea Cellular, Reliance Communications and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited are yet to submit compliance reports on the accuracy levels achieved by them for the same to DoT. However, operators including Tata Teleservices Limited, Vodafone India, Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited, Sistema Shyam TeleServices Limited, Aircel, Telewings Communications and Videocon Telecommunications have submitted the required compliance reports.
In 2011, the government had made it mandatory for service providers to introduce LBS across the country within three years. DoT had amended the operators? licence conditions and had asked them to provide the details as part of call data records. According to the target set by the DoT, law enforcement agencies should be able to track 30 per cent mobile users in urban areas within 50 metres of the location identified by telecom operators. Operators were also mandated to provide location details of 50 per cent of subscribers within 300 metres in semi-urban and rural areas of Jammu and Kashmir, Assam and other northeastern states.
