The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has directed telecom operators to provide weekly reports on steps taken to reduce call drops. It has also asked the companies to improve service in the worst-affected areas on a priority basis. The coverage in and around DoT headquarters, Sanchar Bhawan, has been directed to be improved by August 20, 2015.
Meanwhile, the telecom associations, Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), Association of Unified Telecom Service Providers of India (AUSPI) and Tower and Infrastructure Providers Association (TAIPA) have jointly requested the government for a uniform tower policy to resolve the issue of call drops. According to the industry bodies, a national mobile tower policy will help in improving quality of service. The infrastructure providers often face issues on installing new sites, while the arbitrary shutting down of sites further results in network congestion and poor coverage.
