The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is continuing its efforts to ensure that the country?s telecom networks remain secure.
DoT is currently in the process of requesting the Union Cabinet to approve a proposal to bar foreign vendors from participating in certain telecom projects, say news reports. Besides, it has also proposed to use indigenously manufactured equipment in all projects funded by the Universal Service Obligation (USO) Fund.
Specifically, the proposal pertains to three projects. These include the Rs 200 billion National Optic Fibre Network project, aimed at connecting all panchayats in the country, the Rs 150 billion project that entails building an alternate communication network for the defence forces and the Rs 6 billion network project to ensure confidentiality of information between government departments.
