The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has warned e-commerce companies over illegal facilitation and sale of unauthorised mobile signal boosters and repeaters on online platforms.

Further, the department has also asked the companies to adhere to the rules.

In this regard, Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has been flagging the issue of rampant sale of mobile signal boosters and repeaters on e-commerce sites, despite restrictions. Recently, the industry body had urged DoT to take strict measures to ensure complete ban on sale of illegal repeaters and boosters, offline or online via e-commerce websites.

In its letter to DoT, COAI said that though some e-commerce companies have terminated sale of such equipment from their website/ platform after the association’s detailed assertions on the issue, others continue to sell them.

Further, COAI has requested the DoT, to intervene in the matter and take strict measures to ensure complete ban on sale of these illegal repeaters and boosters, offline or online thru e-commerce websites/platforms through an appropriate notification to sellers of illegal repeaters in the country. Further, the industry body has requested to take up the issue with Ministry of Commerce and Industry to prohibit import of such illegal boosters/ repeaters in the country with immediate effect. In addition, to take up the issue with appropriate ministries including MeitY and DPIIT to curb this menace. Additionally, COAI has also request MHA to issue appropriate directions to State DGPs/CPs/Chief Secretaries to take action under law against the sellers of illegal repeaters in the country.
