The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has awarded the infrastructure provider (IP) category I registration licence to the Kerala Fibre Optic Network (KFON).

As per the official registration with the DoT, KFON will have the authority to acquire, prepare, maintain, repair, rent, lease or sell fibre optic lines (dark fibre), duct space, towers, networks and other facilities.

The KFON project aims at providing connections to below poverty line (BPL) families and 30,000 government offices in the state to ensure universal internet access and to bridge the digital divide.
