The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has awarded a unified licence to Reliance Jio Infocomm (RJIL). With this the company can use any technology to offer telecom services including voice telephony under a single licence.

RJIL has paid a one-time licence fee of Rs 16.58 billion to the government for obtaining the licence.  RJIL is the only company to hold a pan-India 4G licence.

Currently, RJIL holds 20 MHz of pan-India spectrum in the 2.3 GHz band. The company is testing voice over long term evolution technology using this band for offering 4G services. In addition, the company is laying about 100 kilometres of optic fibre cables in the Mumbai and Delhi circles and is expected to launch 4G service in the two circles over the next few months.
