The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has asked operators to terminate the 3G roaming pacts they inked in areas where they do not hold spectrum, say news reports.
Prior to this, Tata Teleservices Limited (TTSL) and Aircel had cancelled their agreement to offer 3G services in each other’s circles.
This followed DoT terming such agreements as illegal on grounds that they were tantamount to spectrum sharing.
The two operators had entered into an intra-circle roaming agreement, under which Aircel began offering 3G services even in those circles where it did not have spectrum.
Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Essar and Idea Cellular had also entered into similar roaming agreements but have not eliminated the contract so far.
