The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has directed Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) to put in place the necessary system to intercept BlackBerry services by February 28, 2013.
In case MTNL fails to do so it will have to stop providing value added services to BlackBerry users from March 1, 2013.
In November 2012, DoT had asked all service providers to install a mechanism for legal interception of BlackBerry services by December 31, 2012 failing which they would have to shut down the services. DoT?s directive came in the wake of security agencies expressing concern over the interception of communication over BlackBerry mobile phones.
Except, MTNL all the other players have adhered to DoT?s directive by ensuring timely deployment of necessary equipment for the interception of Blackberry services.
