The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has approached PricewaterhouseCoopers India (PwC) to frame a carbon credit policy for the telecom industry. In addition, DoT has asked the consultancy firm to evaluate the techno-commercial feasibility of powering 350,000 telecom towers with green or renewable energy solutions.

PwC India is likely to submit its views by February 2014 on the likely methods operators can deploy to reduce their dependence on diesel for powering telecom towers, their carbon footprint and earn carbon credits by feeding clean energy into the national grid over the next few years.

According to DoT, PwC India is in the process of collecting information required to devise a mechanism to determine the carbon credits earned by operators by adopting renewable energy solutions at tower sites. It is believed that the consultancy firm is yet to obtain this data from various operators, including Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited.
