The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) have called a joint meeting with telecom operators and smartphone companies to resolve issues related to 5G services. The meeting will be held on October 12, 2022, at the DoT office.

The agenda of the meeting includes a discussion around enabling handsets to start supporting 5G services in India. The authorities will discuss the intervention of handset manufacturers and telecom operators to release software updates for all 5G handsets and prioritise software upgrades for 5G adoption in the country.

According to an Ericsson report, over the past two years, India has witnessed three times increase in smartphone users who own a 5G handset. While over 100 million subscribers in India have 5G-ready phones, many devices, including Apple, are not supporting the service at present. According to industry sources, Apple is currently testing iPhone with Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio to work on software updates that will give access to 5G services to consumers.
