The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has reportedly agreed to provide 5 MHz from the premium 700 MHz band to Indian Railways for signaling purposes.

However, DoT wants the airwaves to be used by the Indian Railways for non-commercial purposes. The department did not relent to the railway demand for higher quantum of the spectrum and advised the national carrier to meet its remaining demand for spectrum through delicensed spectrum.

The department in its recent response to the cabinet note by the Ministry of Railways, said that 5MHz spectrum of the 700 MHz spectrum band can be given to the Indian Railways at a price decided by the Ministry of Finance.

Earlier, Indian Railways had asked for 10 MHz of spectrum for setting up a public safety and security service.
