The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has stated it does not support a regulatory environment that discriminates between mediums and disadvantages traditional broadcasting. The regulator had welcomed the adoption of new technologies that enhance the audio-visual experience.
The TRAI noted that while online content is governed by the IT (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code), traditional broadcasting falls under the Telecommunication Act and the Cable TV Network Act.
Further, Supreme Court had issued a notice to the Centre regarding a plea seeking curbs on streaming sexually explicit content across over-the-top (OTT) platforms and social media.
Furthermore, TRAI acknowledged the regulatory challenge posed by the differing frameworks for OTT platforms, free ad-supported streaming tv, and traditional broadcasters.
