The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has stated that the lack of adequate spectrum has been the reason for slow broadband speeds in the country. The telecom department told the government that that the Indian telecom companies operate with 5-10 MHz of spectrum, while the operators in the other countries use 20-30 MHz of spectrum on an average. Further, DoT cited the location of servers outside the country by major content providers as a possible impediment to higher internet speeds in India. The government had earlier asked DoT to provide reasons for low broadband speeds in the county. DoT is of the view that a favourable policy should be designed to make additional spectrum available for the telecom operators, supported by merger and acquisition regulations to encourage consolidation in the industry. Further, the government should make policies to incentivise web hosting locally.
