According to a recent study by Tanla, the daily commercial SMS traffic in India has grown by around 20 per cent. This growth has been attributed to the increased digital adoption that has taken place amidst the COVID-19 induced lockdown.
As per Tanla estimates, around 1.3 billion commercial SMSs are sent every day at present. This is despite the 30 per cent hike in SMS tariffs announced by telecom operators in September 2020. In contrast, commercial SMSs sent per day stood at around 1.1 billion in March 2020.
While there has been an increase in the quantum of commercial messages sent, the total number of outgoing SMS per subscriber per month has decreased from 17.86 during quarter ended December 2019 to 17.26 per month during quarter ended March 2020.
