The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has written to the government asking it not to levy service tax on adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues. The exemption has been sought under the Central Excise Act.

As per COAI, in case the exemption is not granted, the telecom industry will suffer incalculable losses.

According to industry sources, the total service tax demands pertaining to telcos AGR dues amoung to around Rs 200 billion or about 15 per cent of AGR dues.
