China Unicom has reported a 19 per cent decline in profits year-on-year to Rmb2.33 billion ($288 million) in the first half of 2005.

According to industry analysts, this reflects the difficulties the company faces in competing with China Mobile, the dominant wireless carrier. China Mobile’s net profits increased nearly 28 per cent year-on-year in the first half to Rmb24 billion. China Unicom simultaneously operates two national networks using GSM and CDMA technologies.
