China Mobile will invite bids from vendors to supply 2 million TDSCDMA mobile handsets worth 4-6 billion yuan in October 2007.
Each handset could cost about 2,000-3,000 yuan. The operator has already paid RMB6-RMB7 billion to acquire network infrastructure for TD-SCDMA operations in 10 cities. Meanwhile, its competitor China Unicom will launch GPRS mobile products in over 200 cities. In 2006, the company had invested over 10 billion yuan to upgrade its GSM networks to GPRS.
