The Centre has delicensed the lower portion of the 6 GHz spectrum band (5925-6425 MHz) to enable indoor Wi-Fi usage, a move expected to unlock Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7 benefits for home broadband users.

Under the notified framework, wireless devices operating in the 6 GHz band will be permitted under defined conditions. The rules provide licence exemption subject to compliance with mandatory technical requirements, while also mandating shared access to the frequency and discouraging exclusive usage rights.

The decision follows intense debate between telecom operators and technology providers, with both sides staking claim over the 6 GHz band, telcos seeking it for rural 5G expansion, and technology companies pushing for its use in indoor Wi-Fi deployments.

The move is also expected to allow original equipment makers to introduce a wider portfolio of Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 compatible routers and devices.
