P. Chidambaram, Minister of Home Affairs, has been given a clean chit by the special CBI court in relation to the 2G spectrum case.

It dismissed Dr Subramanian Swamy, president, the Janata Party?s petition to make Chidambaram a co-accused in the case. Meanwhile, the hearing against A. Raja, former Minister of Communications and IT, will begin on March 17, 2012, say news reports.

The court?s decision concludes Swamy?s long-standing case against Chidambaram. Prior to this, the Supreme Court took a stand in the 2G case and revoked 122 licenses issued under A Raja’s tenure. This included 21 licences of Videocon, 22 licences of Uninor, 9 of Idea Cellular, 3 of Tata Teleservices Limited, 21 of Loop, 6 of S-Tel, 21 of SSTL, 15 of Etisalat and 4 of Spice.

These licences were granted after January 2008 and are being cancelled for being outside the eligibility criteria for allocation of 2G spectrum.

The court has also asked the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to frame guidelines for the allocation of new licences.
