The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has asked the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to ask operators to store customer call records for at least five years. Operators are also expected to provide the same to law enforcement agencies, whenever required.

Citing security concerns, MHA has told DoT that the operators? existing system of keeping call records for six months does not meet the requirements of the security agencies and hence, storing of call details for a longer period is necessary.

However, DoT has not taken a final decision on the issue, as operators have objected to the move, citing high operational costs.

Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies have said that if operators do not comply with the order, after DoT takes a decision, a heavy penalty should be imposed on them.
