The Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) is expecting to deploy indigenously developed 5G telecom gear in Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited’s (BSNL) network in the coming 6-8 months. According to Rajkumar Upadhyay, chief executive officer, C-DOT, the company has indigenously developed the entire 5G standalone (SA) radio, core and internet protocol multimedia system in collaboration with Wisig and VVDN Technologies.

Meanwhile, during a video call with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the India Mobile Congress 2023, the C-DOT demonstrated a test network set up using its 5G equipment. The 4G and 5G non-standalone core has already been deployed in the Punjab circle of BSNL and is being gradually scaled up to a pan-India level.

Further, C-DOT expects private operators to begin expressing interest in its 5G equipment once it is launched in the BSNL network and begins handling large-scale traffic in India. The company is already receiving inquiries from foreign telecommunications companies. Upadhyay believes that the indigenously developed 5G telecom equipment will help to reduce the electronics sector’s $60 billion trade deficit.
