Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has announced that it will launch 4G/5G services in Chennai in 2024. The company will receive equipment from September or October 2023 to commission Rs 100,000 4G base transceiver stations (BTSs) across the country. This will include the upgradation of 8,000 existing BTSs in Tamil Nadu and the setting up 1,500 new ones. As the old equipment can be upgraded to 5G, BSNL is looking at rolling out 5G services soon.

The company added that its tariffs will be competitive and they currently have no plans on increasing it. BSNL has also planned on expanding services to 430 remote uncovered villages in an effort to pull more customers from the rural parts of the state, particularly in Sathyamangalam, Kolli Hills, Yercaud and Jawadhu hills. 282 sites have been identified for the erection of new towers in these regions. The project is to be completed by December 2024  and is estimated to cost Rs 4.33 billion
