Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited has launched Internet Protocol (IP)-based next generation network (NGN) in the northeast region in order to improve the telecom coverage in region. The technology will provide additional facilities to customers on their landline devices. While the customers? telephone numbers, billing cycle and the rate for voice calls will remain unchanged, for services such as video, picture and data through session initiation protocol the service provider will charge differently.

The NGN is expected to improve voice quality and offer broadband services, video calling, nationwide Centrex, seven party conferencing facilities. With its multimedia services, the new system allows at least 30 subscribers to interact with one another by video calling, graphics, picture, data, and also by multiple video conferencing through Session Initiation Protocol enabled telephone devices.

The service has been launched in Shillong and Tripura and will be gradually extended to all eight states of the regions.
