BSNL has awarded a 4 million line cellular contract estimated to be worth around $250 million to Nortel, Ericsson and Nokia.
With its 60 million GSM line project stuck in court, the move will enable the PSU to ease the pressure on its network, which is running at full capacity in most circles. As per the tender conditions, BSNL can give additional orders of up to 20 per cent to the existing vendors without going for a rebid. Meanwhile, Alcatel-Lucent and ITI have won a multi-million euro contract for supplying and installing 2 million GSM lines for BSNL to expand its mobile network in western India.
