Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) have initiated the process of recovering over Rs 50 billion from subscribers as outstanding dues.
For BSNL, the amount stands at Rs 42-45 billion. It is believed that BSNL is in the process of appointing agents on a commission basis to recover the amount.
MTNL, it is believed, has already appointed agents to recover about Rs 8 billion.
In February 2011, MTNL had floated a tender that invited applications for recovering the arrears. As per the conditions of the tender, agents or firms would be paid a commission on the basis of the amount recovered. The contract was for a year.
The selected bidders would have to recover a fixed minimum amount of Rs 0.1 million a month.
