The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has notified quality standards for USB Type C charging port, according to industry sources.

To reduce e-waste and for the consumers’ benefit, the Department of Consumer Affairs in consultation with industry spokespersons is thinking of mandating two types of common charging ports – a USB Type C charge for mobile phones and laptops and one common charger for wearable electronic devices.

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur is doing a study on single charging port for wearable electronic devices. The report once submitted will also be shared for inputs with the industry spokespersons.

The impact of a single charging port for wearables will then also be studied by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change to examine the impact of the move on e-waste.

Stakeholders currently have opined that a phased roll-out will be beneficial for the industry.
