Bharti Airtel plans to launch a new service called progressive download (PDL) service for its direct-to-home (DTH) customers.
The operator has approached the Department of Telecommunications for approval to roll-out PDL service. The PDL service offered by Bharti Airtel will comprise two services – video-on-demand and Catch-up TV. These services will be offered by the operator under the Unified Access Services Licence (UASL) as internet protocol TV (IPTV) services. As a prerequisite, a PDL customer will have to be an existing Airtel DTH and broadband customer.
The revenue generated from the PDL services will be shared between Bharti Telemedia, which provides DTH services to consumers and Bharti Airtel that has a UAS licence to provide IPTV services.
