Bharti Airtel has signed a definitive agreement with United Arab Emirates-based Warid Telecom to acquire Warid Telecom Uganda.

The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

This further consolidates Bharti Airtel?s market position as the second largest operator in Uganda. The operator is expected to add over 2.8 million customers, taking its total user base to over 7.4 million.

Bharti Airtel made its debut in the African market in 2010, with the acquisition of Zain Telecom?s operations in 15 countries in that region. Currently, it is present in 17 African countries.

Commenting on the development, Manoj Kohli, managing director and chief executive officer, International, Bharti Airtel said: ?This happens to be the first in-market acquisition in Bharti Airtel?s history. We believe this market consolidation offers great synergies by bringing together the best of Airtel and Warid to better serve customers in Uganda.?
