Bharti Airtel is contemplating an alliance with the State Bank of India (SBI) for the establishment of a payments bank. This follows the issuance of draft guidelines for the licensing of payments and small banks by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI in July 2014.
The set up of a payments bank will provide an additional revenue stream to the telecom company and also help in banking the unbanked.
